Methods: Many, but mainly two workshops and an experience prototype
We explored design strategies for fostering feelings and reflections of interconnectedness toward the more-than-human world. With a research-through-design process divided into four steps: Select, Design, Evaluate, and Reflect, two workshops were conducted that resulted in many design ideas that we translated into six key design strategies. The strategies were evaluated and further developed through a prototype in partnership with Ekbacken Studios, a Swedish company that up-cycles fishing nets into designer furniture.

Analysis of workshop ideas / ideation on design strategies (a small portion of the total amount of ideas).
Excerpts from the experience prototype where we tested the strategies. Sound also played a big role. During the evaluation step, we tested the prototype with seven participants.

The strategies can be combined with other design methods, for example, how-might-we. Example questions could be “how-might-we provide a different perspective that promotes reflection?” or “how-might-we make [something imperceptible] perceptible in a meaningful way?”.
